Assess your needs
Decide what you need life coaching for. If you are having problems with your spouse or children, you don’t want to choose a personal life coach whose focus is on weight loss. Whatever the case is, you want to find a life coach that specializes in the thing that you want to improve.
Ask family and friends or associates for a reference. Be sure to get a reference from a person who has actually been coached by the person they are referring you to. Some people give references of friends or people that they have worked with in some unrelated manner.
Certification is very important, because life coaching is a profession that requires very specific skills, conduct standards, and a foundation of training which is only taught in qualified schools.
Research your potential life coach
Find out if the coach is a certified life coach and what area of coaching he or she specializes in. Try to determine if you share the coach’s perspective on life in general and in pursuing goals.
